Shaping the Future: Panopto’s Vision for Video Learning and Technology – Part 3 of a 3-Part Series
In the final chapter of our three-part series, we’re diving into the heart of Panopto’s vision for the future of video learning. Lucia Ponader, Panopto’s content writer, continues her conversation with Panopto’s tech leaders, Amit Mondal and Uday Ghorpade, to better understand their perspectives on the unique value of video in sharing knowledge, Panopto’s distinct market position and the evolving role of video platforms. This piece offers a glimpse into the innovative strides Panopto is making and the passion these leaders share for a future where video is the central pillar of knowledge-sharing platforms.
Lucia: What would you say is the unique value proposition of video in the learning experience?
Uday: To put it succinctly, if a picture is worth a thousand words, then a video is worth a thousand pictures. Video accelerates learning by directly conveying concepts that might otherwise take much longer to absorb using text-based learning. A short clip or a 30-minute video effectively communicates what needs to be understood and learned. In essence, video is a powerful learning enabler, making the process more efficient and accessible.
Amit: Beyond the obvious benefit of enhanced attention and retention, another key value of video is enabling more efficient processing and memory recall when users can locate specific content within a video quickly. This feature is incredibly powerful for learning. Being able to jump to the exact minute and second of a video for a particular segment aids in better retention, whether it’s for reviewing lectures or other educational content like flipped classroom videos. This capability helps learners complete their tasks more efficiently and boosts their productivity. Our robust search capabilities within video content are a significant aspect of this value proposition.
Lucia: With several video platforms available in the market, what sets Panopto apart?
Uday: We started as a lecture capture company and have established ourselves as a leader in the higher education market. There are a number of providers that offer similar services, however, we excel in this area because we provide a reliable and dependable platform that our customers trust. However, looking into the future, while we continue to offer reliable lecture capture and VCMS solutions, we are going to expand our solution to become an intelligent knowledge platform. This evolution will establish Panopto as a pioneer in the use of video as a medium to deliver superior learning outcomes to our customers in both the education and the enterprise sectors.
Amit: Panopto’s impact is evident in our widespread adoption; 21 of the top 25 universities use our platform, as do industry-leading companies, including Nike, General Electric, and New York Life. We serve thousands of customers, which reflects the trust and reliability we’ve built. Our stability and dependability are key reasons for our strong customer loyalty. As I look ahead, the exciting part is working with these customers to solve bigger and more complex problems, transforming the way they share knowledge. Over the past 15 years, Panopto has established itself as an industry leader. Our next step is leveraging this to address larger challenges for our customers.
Lucia: The tech world is constantly advancing- how do you ensure you and your team remain updated with the latest trends and technologies?
Uday: Staying informed in the fast-paced technology world is crucial. I primarily rely on reading publications, news sources, and industry newsletters to stay abreast of market developments. I also find podcasts focused on product management and new product development informative and relevant. My team regularly discusses market trends and the evolution of video-based solutions and how we can spot market trends and build comprehensive strategies to stay ahead. All teams get busy with tactical priorities, and thus it is important to build time and space for teams to focus on market and competitive analysis. My team views staying abreast of these trends as critical for our success, and we regularly allocate time to perform research and analysis and engage in constructive strategic discussions.
Amit: My approach involves looking beyond our immediate industry. It is valuable to observe advancements in other sectors, like finance, and consider how their technological innovations could be adapted to our industry to solve customer problems. The rapid developments in AI and other tech areas worldwide are particularly intriguing. I focus on how other tech companies address challenges, aiming to apply similar solutions to benefit our customers and user base. This cross-industry learning is exciting and instrumental in keeping us at the forefront of technological innovation.
Lucia: How do you see the role of video learning platforms evolving in the next five years?
Uday: I predict a significant shift towards microlearning in the coming years, where the byte-size format for content consumption will become commonplace. While our focus has been on lecture capture, often involving hour-long sessions, the trend is moving towards shorter, more concise content. This approach aligns with the learning preferences of the younger generation. Video will become even more central in delivering educational content in the academic and enterprise sectors. I anticipate a rise in video usage driven by the ease of creating new content. Our goal is to simplify the content creation process so that anyone can do it from any device, primarily mobile devices, the medium that most people use and are comfortable with.
Amit: The future of learning is about accessibility and immediacy – learning anytime, anywhere, and just in time. Drawing parallels from consumer behavior, such as how my daughter interacts with Instagram and TikTok, we can expect a similar transformation in how we approach education. Video will be at the heart of this transformation. Our challenge is to make learning as engaging and accessible as platforms like Netflix but with a stronger emphasis on educational outcomes. I’m excited about Panopto’s potential to lead this change.
Lucia: What personally excites you the most about the future of Panopto and its role in higher education and business sectors?
Uday: The most exciting aspect for me is the role of video as a medium through which Panopto can deliver superior learning outcomes. In the enterprise space, despite the presence of many players, the market is quite fragmented. I see a tremendous opportunity for Panopto to become a market leader by delivering compelling video-powered learning solutions that improve student learning and graduation outcomes in the education space and employee productivity in the enterprise sector.
Amit: As I look at higher education and the enterprise sector, there are numerous use cases where video can significantly enhance learning. What excites me is exploring how Panopto can drive the outcomes people seek through video. We’re looking forward to transforming our platform from just a content management system to a truly intelligent knowledge platform. This transformation is critical to driving better learning outcomes, and this potential for impact and change excites me about our future.
