Over 150 Educational Institutions Choose Panopto in 2009

Pittsburgh, Pa., December 14, 2009 – Panopto, Inc., a leading provider of rich media presentation capture solutions for the corporate, education, government and healthcare markets, announced today that more than 150 educational institutions deployed its lecture capture platform in 2009, making it one of the fastest customer acquisition growth rates of any vendor in the higher education sector.

This dramatic growth was driven by the company’s innovative Socrates Program, a program which provides educational institutions with Panopto’s core lecture capture solution free of charge, and Panopto Hosted, its Web-based “lecture capture as a service” solution.

The company also noted that in addition to traditional lecture-only use cases, many institutions are leveraging Panopto for multiple functions including:

  • Pandemic Preparedness
  • Professional Development
  • Student Presentations
  • Internal Campus Communications
  • Simulation Training

“Panopto is committed to decreasing the costs associated with lecture capture by offering schools, colleges and universities affordable lecture capture solutions that empower them to make campus-wide adoptions a reality,” said Brad Winney, chief executive officer for Panopto. “Through Panopto’s Socrates Program as well as our Hosted and Premium offerings, educational institutions have the opportunity to bring lecture capture into their classrooms, offices, lecture halls and homes. As such, we are really proud to see such a widespread endorsement of Panopto’s technology and unique business model.”

Clients note choosing Panopto CourseCast for its advanced functionality, comprehensive service offerings and low total cost of ownership.

“Panopto had the features we wanted at a price we could afford. We were going through budget cuts and could not have afforded a lecture capture trial through a company that wanted to charge us the full-scale price,” said Andaz Ahmad, director of information technology at Ivy Tech-Northeast Community College. “When I told administrators about Panopto and its very affordable rate for a three-semester trial, it was a very easy sell.”

The Socrates Program provides educational institutions with Panopto’s CourseCast Core functionality as well as a self-service support portal free of charge. Customers can receive access to features available in premium releases by subscribing to one of Panopto’s support and training packages available to help users learn how to leverage all of Panopto’s innovative functionality.

“We purchased the service contract, and the service has been superb,” said Waldemar Kowalski, director of information technology at Northwest University. “The help we have had setting up CourseCast and answering our questions has been terrific. This is probably the most responsive technical support team we have dealt with.”

New 2009 customers include Auburn University, Syracuse University, Smith College, University of Quebec at Montreal, Phoenix College, Butler University and more.

Panopto CourseCast produces digital rich media recordings that include video, audio and screen capture components. It also includes integrated note-taking and text search capabilities. Recordings are ready for posting immediately through an automatically generated URL which is generated following a recording. In addition, integration to leading course management systems allows teachers and professors to post recordings to course Web sites instantly.

Panopto also does not require any special proprietary hardware for installation and can run off existing classroom recording equipment as well as simple Web cams, significantly lowering the total cost of ownership compared to traditional lecture capture platforms.
