Panopto Simplifies Cloud-Based Video Management and Editing

New release provides users with a personalized view of video content, reduces TCO for administrators, and enables anyone to edit videos from their web browser

SEATTLE, June 7, 2016 – Panopto today announced a new release of its enterprise video platform. The latest release includes a personalized view of video content, an easily customizable video portal homepage, and a web-based video editor built entirely in HTML5.

The First Personalized Video Content Management System
Video content management platforms (video CMSs) have traditionally been organized using a top-down model. Typically, an administrator creates a hierarchy for content using folders or channels, and then grants users access to a portion of that content. In some cases, admins will also grant users the ability to create videos within a limited set of folders or channels.

There are two problems with this top-down approach. First, it prevents users from curating a personalized view of the content that matters most to them. Second, it places a burden on administrators to manually determine if and where each user can create new video content.

To address these problems, Panopto is introducing a new personalized view of its video CMS:

  • Personal folders for creating videos – Every Panopto user now gets a private folder where they can create videos in a sandboxed environment. The personal folder is created automatically, saving admins time that would normally be spent manually provisioning and granting folder permissions. Videos uploaded to the personal folder can be shared with other people or added to video approval workflows.
  • One-click access to the videos that matter most – When users sign in to Panopto, they’ll see a personalized view of the videos that are most relevant to them. In one click, users can access videos in their personal folder, videos that have been shared with them by other users, and videos that they’ve bookmarked.

“Content management systems like Dropbox and Google Drive have changed the way we organize information,” said Eric Burns, co-founder and CEO of Panopto. “We now expect a personalized view of the content we consider to be most important, including what we’ve created and what’s been shared with us. With today’s release of Panopto, we’re bringing this user-centric approach to organizing video content.”

A Customizable Video Portal
As video continues to become a critical part of online learning and communication, the Video CMS has become a destination site for employees to find relevant and interesting media.

Today’s release of Panopto includes a new YouTube-like portal homepage that can be used to showcase featured videos and playlists, upcoming webcasts, and recently-published videos. The homepage can be customized in less than 5 minutes using a simple drag-and-drop interface.

The Industry’s First HTML5-based Video Editor
Video editing has traditionally been a cumbersome process. It requires the use of specialized client software or dedicated AV equipment. It involves the management of massive video files. And it requires an understanding of media formats to ensure that videos play consistently on people’s laptops, tablets, and smartphones.

To overcome these challenges, today’s release of Panopto includes a new cloud-based video editor. The editor provides a WYSIWYG experience, enabling anyone to perform common video editing tasks regardless of prior AV experience. It runs in any web browser using HTML5, eliminating the need to download specialized software or manage massive files. And it automatically publishes videos into a universal set of formats that are compatible with any device.
